Shalako Longhair Katsina
The Shalako is a Hopi winter ceremony held to pray for rain, good health of the people and for the propagation of plants and animals. Shalako Katsinas have no arms and the masks of these ten-foot figures are carried on poles by their impersonators. Mudhead & Paralyzed Katsina
This pair features a blind mudhead carrying a Tuuhavi (Paralyzed Katsina) in "piggy-back" fashion. While one is blind, the other can see, and while one is paralyzed the other can walk - thus they can help each other hunt and survive. The message here is that there is a role for everyone, no matter their condition. Masterfully created by Henry Fred, of Bacavi, Arizona (3rd Mesa) it measures 12-1/2” tall with base; base is 4” deep and 3-1/4” wide; figure is 4-3/4” deep and 4-3/8” wide.
