The Shalako is a Hopi winter ceremony held to pray for rain, good health of the people and for the propagation of plants and animals. Shalako Katsinas have no arms and the masks of these ten-foot figures are carried on poles by their impersonators.
All of the wonderfully crisp details on this Katsina are made by distinctive pyrographic (woodburned) handwork. Created and signed by M. Ashley, it measures 13-1/4” tall, and base is 2-1/2” across.
